MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin’s 2026 race for governor has its general election matchup: Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley against U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany.

Crowley secured the Democratic nomination last week in a razor-thin primary win over state Rep. Francesca Hong — a margin so close Urban News Journal founder Marcus Hart described it on Friday’s stream as “a photo finish.”

With the primary behind him, Crowley now heads into a very different contest. “Different race now. Different map,” Hart said on Monday’s broadcast. “Because now you’re not just talking to Democrats, you’re talking to the whole entire state.”

What It Means for Milwaukee

Crowley currently serves as Milwaukee County’s chief executive — a role Hart says voters shouldn’t lose sight of as the statewide campaign ramps up.

“Crowley is the Milwaukee County executive running to be the state governor,” Hart said. “What does that actually mean for us, specifically, right here in Milwaukee?”

Hart is asking UNJ’s audience directly: what should a new governor prioritize for Milwaukee and Wisconsin as a whole? He warned that with a statewide race come statewide — and often national — talking points that can crowd out issues specific to the city.

“Whatever national issues get talked about between now and November… that’s what they’re gonna do,” Hart said. “If we don’t be louder than some of the noise they’re gonna be putting out there, we’re never gonna know who’s best for Wisconsin.”

The Race Ahead

Both campaigns are expected to draw significant outside spending as the general election campaign begins in earnest. UNJ will track the race through November, with a focus on what each candidate’s platform means specifically for Milwaukee.
