A Correction and an Apology

CORRECTION: Urban News Journal published a video on TikTok and Facebook that misidentified a Milwaukee-area man in connection with an arrest. That was wrong. This article corrects the record.

MILWAUKEE — On Sunday, Aug. 16, Urban News Journal published a video, cross-posted as a reel to TikTok and Facebook, showing an arrest in Oak Creek. The video went viral. It should not have been published the way it was, and we are correcting it directly, on the record, in full.

What we got wrong

The video was widely understood by viewers to involve the man shown being arrested. After it was posted, UNJ spoke directly and on the record with him about what actually happened: the arrest stemmed from a case of mistaken identity connected to a vehicle that an associate of his had failed to return. He was never booked. The Oak Creek Police Department released him the same day, Sunday, Aug. 16.

Who he is

At his request, Urban News Journal is not publishing his name or the name of his business. What we can tell you: he is a productive member of this community and a local business owner who has done real, tangible good here. He deserved better than to have his image attached to an arrest he had nothing to do with, circulating to an audience far larger than any correction can fully reach.

What we’re doing about it

We removed the original video from TikTok and Facebook as soon as these facts were confirmed. We are publishing this correction with the same visibility we gave the original post, and we addressed it directly, on air, at the top of Friday night’s UNJ LIVE broadcast.

Going forward, Urban News Journal will not publish footage identifying an individual in connection with an arrest until charges or booking status are confirmed directly with the department involved. A viral clip is not a verified fact, and we should have treated it that way the first time.

To the man at the center of this story

We’re sorry. Not the kind of sorry that comes with an explanation attached — just sorry. You didn’t do anything wrong, and for a period of time, a lot of people believed you did because of something we published. We got it wrong, and we owe you this correction in full public view, the same way the original went out.
