Five days after fights broke out on the last night of the Wisconsin State Fair, Urban News Journal sat down and wrote formal accountability letters to seven offices with a hand in that night: Wisconsin State Fair Park, the Governor’s office, the Milwaukee County Executive, the West Allis Mayor, West Allis PD, the West Allis alderperson for the Fair Park district, and the state’s own Office of Open Government. Each letter asked the same question. What happened, and what’s being done about it. Each one demanded a public after-action report.
The plan was simple. Mail the letters, start a public countdown, and hold every office to a 15-business-day clock.
That plan hit a wall this week, and UNJ founder Marcus Hart told viewers about it directly on Wednesday’s livestream rather than let the story quietly disappear.
“Those letters are still sitting right here, printed, addressed, ready to go,” Hart said on air. “They haven’t been mailed yet.”

Certified mail with a return receipt costs real money, and seven separate offices means seven separate fees. That cost wasn’t sitting free in the account this week, Hart said, and rather than fake a countdown that wasn’t running, he chose to tell viewers exactly where things stand.
What is real, and dated: on August 19th, two days after the fight, UNJ sent direct press inquiries by email, at no cost, to the State Fair Park press desk and to West Allis PD, asking directly for comment on what happened that night. Neither has responded. That part of the record stands regardless of the letters’ mailing status.
“The accountability push isn’t dead,” Hart told viewers. “It’s delayed. And we’re not going to hide that from you.”
Getting the seven certified letters mailed is now a concrete, fundable goal, and Hart framed it as an opening for the kind of local business that wants to stand behind independent accountability journalism rather than just watch it from the sidelines. Once the letters are actually in the mail, not before, the real 15-business-day countdown begins, and UNJ will name the exact start date on air.
Two other threads from the Aug 17 incident remain unresolved. A new head-to-head poll shows Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley leading U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany by roughly four points in the race for governor, the first real look at the general election since the primary wrapped, and Crowley is running that campaign in the same week the State Fair story sits unresolved on land the county has a direct relationship with.
Urban News Journal will report the day the letters are mailed, and every response or non-response from the seven offices named above, as it happens.
