New analysis making the rounds this month points to an 11-point drop in Black Democratic identification, with the sharpest movement among younger Black voters who are increasingly checking “independent” or “unaffiliated” instead of picking a team. Pew Research Center’s July 2026 look at midterm voting preferences, paired with reporting on the shift, shows economy and healthcare — not racial and ethnic inequality — topping the list of what Black voters say matters most heading into the midterms. Black unemployment climbed toward 8 percent in some urban areas in the first quarter of the year. That’s not an abstraction.
