This Weekend: Milwaukee Made Art Reception and a Festival for Book Lovers

Community art gallery reception with paintings and string lights
Milwaukee Made brings an art reception and moderated conversation to Gee’s Clippers Saturday.

MILWAUKEE — Free doesn’t mean small. This weekend has two picks worth clearing your Saturday for.

Milwaukee Made: Tyanna Buie and Khari Turner

Saturday, Aug. 22, 6:30–9 p.m., at Gee’s Clippers (2200 N. Martin Luther King Drive). An art reception and moderated conversation featuring two Milwaukee-native artists, Tyanna Buie and Khari Turner, showing work and talking directly with the community about it — in a barbershop, not a gallery with a velvet rope.

Fall in Love with Books Festival

Also Saturday, Aug. 22, 1–4:30 p.m., at the Mitchell Street Branch Library (906 W. Historic Mitchell St.). Hosted by Milwaukee Poet Laureate Shelly Conley, the festival features local poets, authors, and storytellers. A great one to bring kids to.

Also This Weekend

Sunday brings the 5th Annual Back to School Bash, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. (doors at 10:30 a.m.) at 5370 W. Fond du Lac Ave. — free backpacks and school supplies for families heading into the new school year.

Why We Cover This

Black culture in Milwaukee doesn’t need a marketing budget to matter. It needs people showing up. Go see some art, grab a book, support the people building something on your block.
